Job Description Summary

The Onshore Wind Machine Gearbox Leader is responsible for the main gearbox system within the Machine Head engineering team including the gearbox design requirements, system integration and validation, cooling and lubrication components, drivetrain alignment and low speed couplings.

This role leads a global engineering team to perform the system design of components and develop product, solutions, including technical improvement of existing products and components. This role reports to the Machine Head Engineering Leader.

The leader in the role will be expected to define and execute business priorities utilizing LEAN tools and create and implement a team strategy that utilizes hiring new talent, increasing the skills and capabilities of team members, and managing poor performance. They will need to quickly understand the technical details of the components in the gearbox team (design requirements, design practices, system interactions, manufacturing processes, etc.) to help the design team make decisions that result in robust, yet cost effective, designs. The gearbox leader will need to collaborate with a breadth of internal stakeholders including, but not limited to, Machine Head functional manager peers, Systems Engineering, Program Management & Operations, Sourcing, Supplier Quality, Manufacturing, Installation & Commissioning, Product Line, and Fleet Performance Management. They must develop and maintain relationships with suppliers, particularly Build-to-Spec suppliers. This leader will regularly communicate with and present to external customers and internal senior leaders on new product design technology and ongoing root cause analysis activities.

Job Description

Essential Responsibilities

  • Lead a global engineering team that designs new technologies, new products, validates products, assesses products for new applications, supports requisitions, and develops solutions for fleet issue resolution

  • Ensure design releases result in high product quality that meets availability, reliability, and performance targets

  • Influence and execute business priorities utilizing LEAN tools to drive strong operational rigor

  • Manage priorities of team members and utilize network and organizational knowledge to remove roadblocks as necessary.

  • Promote a team culture that focuses on gearbox integration and performance prediction using appropriate analytical methods.

  • Technically underwrite the gearbox system design and validation plans.

  • Partner with the sourcing commodity and quality leaders to co-lead the gearbox component team to set product reliability expectations.

  • Create a culture within the team that promotes product safety, psychological safety, collaboration, proactive engagement, accountability, and self-reflective growth.

  • Set clear expectations for the team and hold team accountable to complete commitments on time in prioritization order of Safety, Quality, Delivery, and Cost.

  • Work with the systems and controls team to set expectations on product requirements and flow down.

  • Work with cross functional leaders to down select technology choices.

  • Partner with the materials team to set clear product requirements to meet reliability targets.

  • Design and execute a team strategy that results in a high-performing team by hiring new talent, increasing the skills and capabilities of engineers, and managing poor performance in a timely manner.

  • Collaborate without boundaries with a breadth of cross-functional teams to influence decisions and achieve customer-focused outcomes and minimize rework and workload creation in the organization.

  • Develop and maintain a relationship with strategic suppliers to create transparency & collaboration opportunities

  • Present complex ideas in an easy-to-understand manner to internal senior leaders and external customers

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited university or college in Engineering or related discipline

  • Minimum of 10 years of engineering experience

  • Minimum of 4 years of leadership experience

  • Minimum of 3 years Wind or gearbox industry experience

  • Ability and willingness to travel up to 30% of time

  • Proven ability to drive process improvement, implement standard work, and utilize Lean operating principles.

  • Excellent communicator with demonstrated ability to connect positively with others.

  • Strong business acumen & customer focus.

  • Master’s degree in Engineering from an accredited college or university.
