Job Description Summary

GridOS® Simulation is an offline software system for training electrical power system dispatchers. The Simulation system emulates Energy Management System (EMS), but it is isolated from all real-time EMS activities. Simulation provides control center functions, such as Automatic Generation Control (AGC), to give the dispatcher trainee control of the simulated power system. For the instructor, Simulation provides simulation control tools for controlling the training sessions and for modifying the parameters of both the power system model and the simulation. GE Vernova is currently looking to hire an innovative and passionate Staff Software Engineer to drive the design and implementation Simulation functionality in GridOS® environment. In this role, you will closely work with a team of 8-10 people who are responsible for developing, evolving, and supporting a collection of Simulation Modules. You will act as a technical lead who owns internal and external communication, finalizing requirements and provide high-level system design for the GridOS® Simulation environment. You will contribute to technologies choices, software design, software implementation, troubleshooting, and integration with other GE GridOS® products. The responsibilities include working with Electric Utilities or ISOs (Independent System Operators) and Transmission System Operators on functional software specifications, designing, coding, testing, integration, application tuning and release.

Roles and Responsibilities

In this role, you will:

  • Act as a Senior member in the team, representing the face of high-quality design and development practices. Design and implement new functionalities in power system application software which includes Transmission Applications & Generation Applications as a part of DTS (Dispatcher Training Simulator) for GridOS® Simulation.

  • Provide maintenance of power systems application functionality in Simulation, including code fixes, creating tools for model conversion, documentation, and user interfaces.

  • Collaborate with system/project engineers, frontend developers and Energy Management System (EMS) and Dispatcher Training Simulator (DTS) application developers to implement solutions that are aligned with GridOS® direction.

  • Responsible for writing Simulation Functional Software Designs.

  • Interfaces with internal and external customers on general and specific issues within area of functional expertise.

  • Provides marketing support for proposals and demonstrations to potential customers.

• Demonstrate the understanding of Agile software development lifecycle and able to distinguish the core inputs and outputs in each cycle.

• Execute in a fast pace delivery mode and focus in delivering tasks to meet the product release goal

• Maintain code quality through best practices, unit testing and code quality automation

• Demonstrate the ability to make informed technology choices after due diligence and impact assessment

• Understand whole product, its modules and the interrelationship between them while being an expert in the assigned component or module

• Articulate the need for scalability and understand the importance of improving quality through testing.

• Be an expert in writing code that meets standards and delivers the desired functionality using the technology selected for the project

• Drive design reviews, define interfaces between code modules, and applies existing technology to designs. Present technical ideas through white boarding.

• Be an expert in assessing application performance and optimizing/improving it through design and best coding practices

• Be responsible for providing technical leadership and defining, developing, and evolving software in a fast paced and agile development environment using the latest software development technologies and infrastructure

• Provide guidance to a team of 8 - 10 with either planning and execution and/or design architecture using agile methodologies such as SCRUM

• Work with Product Line Leaders (PLLs) to understand product requirements & vision

Education Qualification

The position requires a Master’s degree, or foreign degree equivalent, in Electrical Engineering or STEM Majors (Science, Technology, Engineering or Math) and 8-10 years of related experience. Alternatively, Ph.D or foreign degree equivalent, in Electrical Engineering or STEM Majors (Science, Technology, Engineering or Math) and 3-5 years of related experience is acceptable

Desired Characteristics:

Technical Expertise:

  • Work experience in the power systems area.

  • Excellent programming skills in C++, Java or other related language, as required. Knowledge on scripting languages.

  • Should have experience in working with micro-services based solutions, which are on premise or on cloud.

  • Excellent knowledge of assigned technical area and a strong understanding of the EMS and DTS (Dispatcher Training Simulation) software.

  • Delivered power systems and/or energy management system applications with focus on Network Applications like Power flow, Fault Analysis, Automatic Generation & Control, Economic Dispatch and Dispatcher training Simulator.

  • Experience with electric utility industry practices

  • Strong knowledge of customer perspective and needs.

  • Proven software design skills at the application and technical area level.

  • Ability to see integration issues and to preclude schedule impacts.

  • Strong verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills. Ability to write professional and technical reports and procedures. Ability to make formal and informal presentation to technical and non-technical staff and customers.

  • End-to-end ownership and accountability for tasks is required, including gathering requirements, completing technical work, proposing a testing plan, and documenting functionalities.

  • Self-starter; comfortable pulling together information from multiple resources.
